NBC Wants Another Helping of 'Biggest Loser'

(Posted November 23, 2005 by Leah Yoakum)

With its ratings growing as its contestants shrink, "The Biggest Loser" has earned another season at NBC.

The weight-loss series, a surprise hit for the network last season, hasn't quite lived up to the ratings it drew last year, but its performance has improved in recent weeks as the end of the game approaches. The season finale is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 29.

So far this fall, "The Biggest Loser" is averaging about 8.8 million viewers per week and a 3.6 rating in NBC's favorite demographic of adults 18-49. That's off some from the 10.3 million viewers the show drew last year but still a decent number for the scuffling network.

Additionally, the show has posted its two best performances of the season in the past two weeks, topping 10 million viewers both times. It consistently finishes second in its time period (behind CBS' "NCIS") in both viewers and adults 18-49.

In next week's live finale, one of the final three contestants will take home the top prize of $250,000. Also, one of the 11 previously eliminated players will get $100,000 for having lost the largest percentage of weight since leaving the show.

NBC hasn't said when the third season of "The Biggest Loser" will air. The network is also planning to roll out self-contained episodes of the show sometime next year but hasn't set a place for them on the schedule.
