WELCOME TO THE GREEN HORNET AT CLASSICTVHITS.COM!
The Green Hornet and Kato prowl the streets of the city, fighting crime in a most unusual way: by allowing themselves to be perceived as criminals.
Britt Reid, owner-publisher of the Daily Sentinel newspaper and television station DSTV, fights crime by day as a crusading media mogul and by night as the Green Hornet. His house servant, Kato, serves as his masked partner on his crusade to bring criminals to justice. Only two other people know the truth: District Attorney Frank P. Scanlon, and Britt's secretary, Lenore "Casey" Case.
THE HISTORY: The Green Hornet began as a radio program in Detroit on WXYZ in the 1930s. George W. Trendle created the program on the heels of another successful program of his, The Lone Ranger. (There was a connection, mentioned in other incarnations of the character but never in the TV show: the Lone Ranger was the Green Hornet's great-uncle.)
William Dozier created the series on the heels of the phenomenal success of Batman. ABC ran the show on Friday nights from 7:30 until 8:00. The actors felt that, since the show was more serious than the campy fun of Batman, they needed more than the 30 minute format to develop the characters. ABC, however, was unwilling to make this commitment to the show, and as a result the show only ran for 26 episodes before being cancelled in 1967.
BRITT REID is the millionaire playboy owner of the Daily Sentinel and station DSTV. His father, the founder of the Sentinel, was also a crusading newsman. For his efforts he was framed and imprisoned. Britt inherited the paper and decided to carry on his father's crusade against crime, but in a totally different way. He dons a green fedora, mask, and overcoat and calls himself "The Green Hornet". The Hornet's M.O. is simple: he moves in on an established racket and threatens to take over or cut himself a part of the deal. Those who don't cooperate find themselves under arrest, thanks to anonymous phone calls from the Green Hornet.
KATO: In the series, Kato is presented as Britt's servant at home and his gung fu-fighting partner on the streets. His martial arts expertise is as lethal as any weapon, and criminals who would challenge him to a fight would quickly regret that. (Because the series never had a chance to develop the characters, the facts that Kato had a science degree and came into Britt's service when Britt saved his life were never established. Kato, however, was credited with creating the gadgets that the Green Hornet used, including the special features of his car, the Black Beauty, and the Hornet Gun.)
LENORE "CASEY" CASE: Britt's secretary is one of the two people given the privilege of knowing that her boss and the Green Hornet are the same person. She has a crush on Britt, a fact that she never voices to him directly but lets show in snips of jealousy when Britt shows up with a date.
FRANK P. SCANLON: Frank is the other person who knows the Green Hornet's true identity. He is the city District Attorney, and he helps Britt carry out the double life by feeding him information about criminal investigations or making sure that the police show up at a crime scene just in time to miss the Green Hornet's escape. He has a transmitter in the temple of his glasses through which Britt can summon him to secret meetings about whatever caper they are trying to destroy.
MIKE AXFORD: The Sentinel's veteran crime reporter, Mike was a dear friend of Britt's father (a fact he often reminds Britt of). He loves his job after over 30 years on the beat, and he loathes the Green Hornet. He uses his pen to attack the Hornet in the press, and lives for the day when the Hornet is captured.
