> Description
Contestants on the original People Are Funny were picked from the studio audience by host Art Linkletter prior to the filming of each week's episode. On the air they would be interviewed by Art and then asked to get involved in some stunt that would prove that "people are funny." Some stunts, including tests of memory, greed, decision-making or some other trait, took place in the studio - and often ended in pie-throwing, water-dousing, or the like as the penalty. In others, contestants were given an assignment to complete before the next week's telecast, usually a trick on or test of unsuspecting outsiders - for example, trying to cash a check written on a 40-pound watermelon, or simply trying to give away money to passersby (that can be surprisingly hard). On the next show the contestant would report back with the often hilarious results.

People Are Funny began on radio in 1942. During its first three seasons of TV the radio broadcasts continued, consisting of the sound track from the TV version. Later the TV version was a film of the previously aired radio show. In the 1956-1957 season a computer-dating feature was added, in which a couple, matched by Univac computer, got to know each other while answering questions in a quiz-show segment of the program.

More than 20 years after the original People Are Funny ended its run, NBC aired a short-lived revival hosted by Flip Wilson. The stunts were similar, but this time conducted entirely outside the studio, mostly on the streets of Los Angeles, Among the gags were two men trying to get passersby to join them "fishing" in an open manhole, while they caught healthy-looking trout; a little girl in a restaurant who tried to get a patron to eat her "icky" vegetables for her, before her mother came back; and a woman who tried to persuade a delivery boy to disrobe before entering a "nudist condominium" to make a delivery.
